MIKE OWENS, HEAD COACH

Coach Mike Owens begins his 12th year as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach / Athletic Coordinator of Robert E. Lee High School.  He has coached for thirty-two years. Coach Owens has been a head coach for twenty six years, fourteen of those years in Port Arthur, Texas. Coach Owens has been named District 22-5A “Coach of the Year” six times. He has been named District 11/12-5A “Coach of the Year” four times, East Texas “Coach of the Year” four times & 2004 Associated Press 5A Division 1 “Coach of the Year”. He has taken his teams to the play-offs nine times in eleven years.  Mike Owens has coached Tyler Lee to District Football Championships in 5 of the last 6 years.  In 2002 Coach Owens took REL to the State Semi-Finals. In 2004 Coach Owens took REL all the way, winning his first 5A Division 1: State Championship as Head Coach. He was nominated to coach the Texas All-Star Football team for the 2005-2006 football seasons. Mike Owens came to Lee from his hometown of Port Arthur, Texas, where he played high school football at Thomas Jefferson High School. His athletic achievements include, three-year starter as LB/OL, all district and team captain his junior and senior years, regional track shot putter his junior and senior years and 3-year letterman in baseball. Mike received his BA degree in History from Tulane University where he was a three-year starter on the offensive line. Mike was named team offensive captain and selected to the All-South team during his senior season at Tulane. He participated in two bowl games while at Tulane, the “Liberty Bowl” and the “Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl”. Mike continued his education and earned his M.Ed. from Lamar University. When Mike is not coaching he enjoys R.V. camping.

 Coach Owens and his wife, Kathy, have three children: Jordan, age 23, Tyler, age 19, and Ashlyn, age 18.

JAY LAW, ASSISTANT HEAD COACH

Coach Jay Law has spent 40 years as a coach, and has been at REL for the last 10 years. In addition to his duties as assistant head coach, he is Varsity Defensive Coordinator and also teaches Health. At Vidor High School he earned All-District honors in football, basketball, baseball, and track. After graduation from high school, Jay attended Texas A & M University and received his college degree from Lamar University. 

DOW WYNN III, OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Coach Dow Wynn III starts his twenty-ninth year coaching and his eleventh year at Robert E. Lee High School as the Varsity Offensive Coordinator. He also coaches track and teaches Personal Fitness. Coach Wynn is from Port Arthur, Texas, where he was a wide receiver and played basketball at Thomas Jefferson High School. As a graduate of Lamar University, he received degrees in Physical Education and History. Coach Wynn says that “Being allowed the great privilege to belong to the Association of the Texas High School Coaches for the past 29 years” is one of his favorite achievements. When Dow is not coaching, he enjoys playing chess and reading. 

Coach Wynn has three children: Dow Wynn IV, 26, John, 23, and Katelynn, 18.

RANDY HUFFSTICKLER, DEFENSIVE BACKS

Coach Randy Huffstickler has been a coach for 24 years. This is his 11th year at Tyler Lee. He is the defensive coordinator, coaches the defensive backs, Head Powerlifting coach, and teaches Health. Randy graduated from Southwood High School in Shreveport, where he lettered in football and baseball. After high school, he attended the University of Central Arkansas, where he not only earned a BSE degree, but was also a 4-year letterman in football, earning first team All-American honors. In 2002, “Coach Huff” was inducted into the University of Central Arkansas Hall of Fame. Twelve of Randy’s years of coaching have been at the college level, having coached at Lamar University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and Northwestern State University. He also coached at Vidor High School.

Coach Huffstickler and his wife Dianne are the proud parents of Kirby, age 16 and Tyler, age 13.

WILLIE WILLIAMS, DEFENSIVE ENDS
 
Coach Willie Williams has been coaching for twenty-nine years; nine of those years have been at REL High School. Coach Williams coaches the defensive ends, special team’s coordinator, and 9th grade basketball. He also teaches Physical Education Activities Classes. Coach Williams attended Big Spring High School where he was a 2-year letterman in football, point guard on his basketball team and shortstop and second baseman on the baseball team. He was named to the Big Spring High School Hall of Fame. Willie attended Austin College where he receives his BA and was named “All Conference” and “All American” in his football junior and senior years.  Willie was named “All Conference” in basketball his senior year, “All District” in baseball for three years, and was placed in the Austin College Hall of Honor and N.A.I.A. Hall of Fame.  He continued his education at Tarleton State University, where he received his M.Ed.  When Willie is not coaching he enjoys golf, softball, basketball, and racquetball. 

Coach Williams and his wife Cindy have two children: Jordan, age 16 and Camden, age 15.

GARY FLEET, OFFENSIVE LINE

Coach Gary Fleet has coached for 23 years and has been at REL for the last 18 years.  Coach Fleet is the offensive line coach, running game coordinator, helps coach track, and teaches Math of Models. Gary graduated from John Tyler High School where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track.  He earned “All-District” and “All-East Texas” honors in both football and baseball and was named “Athlete of the Year” in 1979 and 1980. Coach Fleet received his BA from Abilene Christian University, where he lettered for four years in football, was the team captain, and was “All-Conference” center. He earned his Masters degree at UT Tyler.

Coach Fleet and his wife Brenda have three children: Kyle, age 28, Kathryn, age 24, and Tyler, (a senior and # 80 on REL varsity football team) age 17

JERRY REED, DEFENSIVE LINE

Coach Jerry Reed has been coaching for twenty-nine years; ten of those years have been at REL and for the last six years he has been coaching the defensive line. Coach Reed also coaches JV Football, JV and Varsity Track and teaches IPC at Robert E. Lee High School.  He was Assistant Coach at  Linden-Kildare, State champion in 1980 baseball, Head Coach of the state champion team in 1988 and Head Coach of state runner up in 1989 in baseball. Coach Reed was also the Assistant Coach of the 2004 REL State Football Championship team. Jerry attended Linden-Kildare High School in Linden, Texas where he received “All District” honors in football as Rover/ LB and in baseball as Outfielder.  Coach Reed attended Southern Arkansas University where he played football and received his BS degree in education. He continued his education and received a M.Ed. from Steven F. Austin University. When Jerry is not coaching, he loves to fish, hunt and travel.

Coach Reed and his wife Mary Ellen have four children: Rebecca, Jennifer, Chris and Tyler.

PEYTON MULLINS, OFFENSIVE BACKS

Coach Peyton Mullins has been coaching for thirty-three years. He has been coaching at REL for eleven years.  Peyton coaches the offensive backs, kickers & J.V. offense. He is the Head Track Coach and teaches U.S. History. Coach Mullins graduated from Conroe High School where he was quarterback, “All-District” kicker/punter, and pole-vaulter on the track team and centerfielder on the baseball team. After graduation he attended Blinn Jr. College where he was a starting strong safety. Peyton was also starting quarterback at Tarleton State University where he received his BS degree. He received his teacher’s certificate from Sam Houston University. When Peyton is not coaching he enjoys fishing, hunting and diving. 

Coach Mullins is married to Vicki, who is a teacher at Bell Elementary School.  They have two sons: Jeff, age 21, a student at Texas State in San Marcos and Matt, age 18, a freshman at Tyler Jr. College.

ELGIN JOHNSON, TIGHT ENDS

Coach Elgin Johnson has spent his entire 9-year coaching career as a Red Raider.  Coach Johnson is the tight end coach, coaches JV baseball, and teaches Biology I. Elgin graduated from Bullard High School where he was a four-year letterman in football, baseball, and track. Coach Johnson graduated from Tyler Junior College with his AA and Texas A & M University with a BS degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry.

RICKY PALMER

Coach Ricky Palmer has coached for 26 years and has previously coached at REL for 6 years, which at that time he coached football (varsity punters, kickers, tight ends, and freshmen head coach) and baseball (JV and Varsity). This year marks his return to REL and Ricky coaches Varsity punters and kickers along with teaching Physical Education. His coaching honors include: “All District Baseball Coach of the Year (1983-1984) “Coach of the Year” (basketball, girls, 1985-1986), and “Football Coach of the Year” (1987, 1988). Coach Palmer graduated from Texas Military Institute, San Antonio, Texas and he also attended John Tyler High School. He earned “All District” in football (punter, kicker, and running back) as well as “All District” in baseball.  Ricky received his B.S. from University of Southern Mississippi and his M.Ed from Stephen F. Austin. He was a 4-year football letterman, 2-year baseball letterman, and “All South Independent Punter”. He also signed 3 free agent pro football contracts with Saints, Cardinals, and Raiders – punter, kicker, and tight end. When Ricky is not coaching he enjoys golf and watching Jonathan play football in college.

Coach Palmer is married to Frances, who is a Counselor at Chapel Hill High School. They have one son, Jonathan (23) who is a 2002 graduate from Robert E. Lee and currently a senior football player at Southern Mississippi. Graduate 2006 and complete his Master’s May of 2007.

DAVID HOWARD, FRESHMEN

Coach David Howard begins his 6th year as a coach, all at REL. He coaches freshmen football, varsity baseball, and teaches Pre AP Biology. Coach Howard graduated from Harmony High School in Gilmer, Texas, where he earned “First-Team All State Second Baseman” honors. David graduated from Texas A & M University with a BS in Kinesiology and received his Master of Education in Athletic Administration from UT Tyler. Prior to coaching at REL. David was the assistant baseball coach at Tyler Junior College.

Coach Howard and his wife Megan have a 2-year-old son, Camden.

RANDY CLIFT, FRESHMEN

Coach Randy Clift, a 21-year coaching veteran, has been at Tyler Lee for the past six years. He coaches 9th grade football, 9th grade baseball, cross country, and also teach English III. Randy is a graduate of Garland High School where he played varsity football.  He attended Ouachita Baptist University, and received his Masters degree from Henderson State University. Coach Clift has the honor of having coached two state championship teams: Wilmer-Hutchins in 4A and Tyler Lee in 5A.

Coach Clift’s wife’s name is Debbie.

MIKE PIRTLE, FRESHMEN

Coach Mike Pirtle has been coaching for 22 years, the last 6 years at REL High School. Coach Pirtle coaches the Freshman TB’s and DB’s.  He is also Varsity Football Press Box Coach, Head Varsity Baseball Coach, and teaches World History. Mike Pirtle is from Longview, Texas. He is a graduate of Pine Tree High School. He received his Associate of Arts degree from Paris Junior College. He graduated with a B.S. in History and earned his Masters of Education from SFA in 1984. Mike earned 4-year college baseball letter. He was named MVP in baseball, and Gold Gloves of SFA. He was baseball team captain at Paris Junior College and SFA, received the Dick Wright Memorial award and named “All-Region” at Stephen F. Austin. After serving as a graduate assistant at SFA, Pirtle returned to Longview, coaching baseball for three years at Spring Hill, his first two as an assistant. Coach Pirtle was named five times as District 19-2A Coach of the Year while at Harmony and was twice selected as the Tyler Courier Times-Telegraph Coach of the Year. In 1990, he was the Texas High School 2A Coach of the Year.  The Texas High School Coaches Association elected Mike a member of the Baseball Advisory Committee. When Mike is not coaching he enjoys fishing, working in the yard, building and watching kids in athletics.  

Coach Pirtle and his wife, Andrea, have three sons: Drew, age 21, Tyler, age 18, and Brett age, 15.

JEFF MILLER, FRESHMEN

Coach Jeff Miller has coached for 7 years and this is his 1st year at REL.  He coaches freshmen football, freshmen basketball, and teaches Health. Coach Miller graduated from Spring High school in Spring, Texas where he played defensive end and lettered for 2 years. He attended The University of Texas at Austin where he attained his Bachelor of Science. One of Jeff’s achievements is “Student Assistant for Texas Football”. His interests/hobbies include: golf, hunting, and fishing.

Coach Miller is married to Lara, who is the Southern Belle Director at REL. They have one daughter, Morgan Leigh.

BRIAN LAWSON, FRESHMEN

Coach Brian Lawson begins his 3rd year of coaching and 1st year at REL. He coaches freshmen football and teaches IPC. Brian graduated from Rusk High School in Rusk, Texas where he played the position of offensive and defensive tackle. He earned “All District Offensive Tackle”, “All Area Offensive Tackle”, and in 1992 “Best all Around Male Athlete”. He received his Associate in Science from Tyler Junior College, B.A.A.S. from UT at Tyler, and Post Graduate Teacher Certification from Stephen F. Austin. His coaching honors/achievements include: Junior Varsity and Varsity 21–A District Champs. Brian’s interests and hobbies are sports (softball, weigh lifting, and football).

Coach Lawson’s Fiancée’s name is Christi and she is a Therapist. There are three children: Parker, age 14, Adam, age 13, and Josh, age 6.
